What Does SCADA Stand For?

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is a control system architecture that uses computers, networked communications, and graphical interfaces to provide high-level supervision of machines and processes across an entire manufacturing facility — or even across multiple sites.

How Does a SCADA System Work?

A SCADA system collects real-time data from field devices — PLCs, RTUs, sensors, and drives — transmits it over an industrial network, and displays it on an operator workstation. Operators can monitor plant-wide status, acknowledge alarms, analyse trends, and send control commands, all from a centralised location.

Key Components of a SCADA System

  • Field Devices — PLCs, RTUs, sensors, and actuators that interact with the physical process
  • Communication Network — Ethernet, PROFIBUS, Modbus TCP, or OPC UA linking field devices to the control room
  • SCADA Server — collects, processes, and stores data from all connected field devices
  • HMI / Operator Workstation — Panel PC or industrial workstation running SCADA software (Ignition, WinCC, InTouch, iFIX)
  • Historian — long-term data archive for trend analysis, reporting, and compliance

SCADA vs DCS vs PLC: What Is the Difference?

DCSContinuous process plantRefinery, chemical, power generation

What Hardware Does a SCADA Workstation Need?

A SCADA workstation must run 24/7 without failure. Specification requirements include:

  • Fanless design — prevents dust-related failures on the factory floor
  • Intel Core i5 or i7 processor — handles multiple simultaneous data streams
  • 8–16 GB RAM — for SCADA runtime, historian, and reporting tools
  • Multiple COM ports — for PLC and serial device connectivity
  • Dual LAN ports — for OT network isolation and redundancy
  • Wide operating temperature — 0°C to 50°C minimum; extended range for harsh zones
