What Does OPC UA Stand For?

OPC UA stands for OPC Unified Architecture. OPC originally stood for OLE for Process Control, a Microsoft Windows-based standard. OPC UA is the modern, platform-independent successor — it runs on Windows, Linux, and embedded systems, communicates over standard TCP/IP networks, and incorporates built-in security.

Why OPC UA Matters for Industry 4.0

Traditional industrial protocols (Modbus, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP) are excellent for machine-level control but were not designed for plant-wide data integration or cloud connectivity. OPC UA addresses this gap:

  • Vendor-neutral — a Siemens PLC, an Avalue industrial PC, and a Ignition SCADA server can all communicate via OPC UA without custom adapters
  • Secure by design — built-in encryption (TLS), authentication, and access control
  • Rich data model — transmits not just values but context (units, data type, timestamp, quality)
  • Platform-independent — runs on Windows, Linux, ARM, and embedded RTOS

Avalue industrial PCs run OPC UA servers and clients natively on Windows or Linux, making them ideal OPC UA gateway nodes for your factory. Contact TSL Automation Solutions for integration guidance.
